The President serves as a unifying figure for all Singaporeans, representing the nation’s collective identity, values, and aspirations. In supporting initiatives that promote inclusiveness and social cohesion, the President seeks to rally Singaporeans around shared values of compassion and respect for all.
The President engages actively with civic groups, grassroots, as well as ethnic and religious organisations, so as to foster deeper mutual support, trust, and respect among Singaporeans. As patron of a range of causes, the President also lends support to efforts that advance the social good across different sectors.
The Istana serves as venue for the President’s conduct of official duties.
It was first built by the British colonial government in 1869 to house its Governors, and known then as the Government House. When Singapore attained self-governance in 1959, it was renamed Istana (“Palace” in Malay).
The Istana was the residence and office of the British governors in the colonial period, and for the first few Presidents after Singapore’s Independence. Today, it houses the offices of the President and Prime Minister, and is a venue for State events and other important official functions.
The Istana is opened to the public up to five days a year. During the Open Houses, the President takes the opportunity to meet with Singaporeans from all walks of life. Find out more about the Open House here.
The Open House events also feature local cultural performances and community groups that are advancing the social good.
