APPOINTMENT TO PRESIDENTIAL COUNCIL FOR MINORITY RIGHTS (PCMR)
The President has appointed Mr Syed Hassan bin Syed Mohamed Bin Salim Al-Attas as a member of the Presidential Council for Minority Rights for a term of 3 years with effect from 15 July 2021.
The Presidential Council scrutinises laws passed by Parliament to ensure that no provision in those laws discriminates against any racial or religious community.
Mr Syed Hassan is the imam of Masjid Ba’Alwie and is a Council Member of the Inter-Religious Organisation, Singapore. Mr Syed Hassan is a strong advocate for interfaith dialogue, and has led many initiatives to build mutual understanding between people of different religions. He was awarded the Meritorious Service Medal in 2015 for his continuous efforts to enhance racial and religious harmony in Singapore.
Mr Othman Haron Eusofe, Prof Chan Heng Chee, Mr Barry Desker, Mr Philip Jeyaretnam and Venerable Sik Kwang Sheng will be re-appointed as members of PCMR for a term of 3 years with effect from 15 July 2021.
Mr JY Pillay and Shaikh Syed Isa bin Mohamed Semait have stepped down from the Presidential Council. Mr JY Pillay was first appointed to the Presidential Council in 2003, and Shaikh Syed Isa in 2015. The President and the Government thank them for their service to the Presidential Council.
Mr Syed Hassan is presented with his Instrument of Appointment and sworn in at the Istana today at a ceremony officiated by President Halimah Yacob. His oath is taken before Chief Justice Sundaresh Menon.
