Ladies and Gentlemen
First of all, let me wish you Happy Chinese New Year and 新年快乐,身体健康,龙马精神。It is a pleasure for me to host this reception in appreciation of all your contributions to the Chingay Parade 2014.
The Singapore Chingay street parade began in the 1970s as a neighbourhood parade. From what was mainly an event to celebrate the Chinese New Year at that time, it has evolved into the current showcase of the rich, vibrant multi-ethnic cultures that is uniquely Singapore. The Chingay Parade has grown over the years to become probably Asia’s grandest street and floats parade, and draws an increasing number of tourists every year.
More importantly, the Chingay Parade has become an occasion for all of us, fellow Singaporeans, to come together to celebrate our nation, our people and our values.
Involving tens of thousands of people from all walks of life in various roles as performers, volunteer marshals, ushers and motivators, the Chingay Parade is a fine example of how we Singaporeans, are a closely knit community, regardless of our race, religion, culture and backgrounds.
I commend the People’s Association for its creativity in choosing the theme of “Colours of Fabric, One People” for this year’s parade. The Finale item, which involves seniors and respected representatives from ethnic communities, religious organisations, the grassroots movement as well as students and youths, represents a strong commitment among the diverse groups in our society coming together as One People.
Many of the participants representing these various groups are here with us today. I would like to congratulate all of you for a wonderful performance. You have conveyed a very important message to all Singaporeans that if we stay united as one people, Singapore can continue to rise above any challenges that may come our way. Thank you so much for your efforts.
I would also like to thank the People’s Association and your major partners, including the Singapore Totalisator Board and Singapore Tourism Board, and all donors and sponsors for your valuable contributions towards this year’s Chingay Parade.
Next year will mark a milestone for Chingay as the parade will kick start our national celebration of fifty years of nation building. I hope that you will continue with your strong support to make Chingay 2015 an even better, grander and more memorable parade.
Once again, thank you all for making Chingay 2014 such a success. I look forward to interacting with you later during the reception. Thank you.
