I am delighted to be here to officiate the opening of the Singapore Chinese Chamber of Commerce & Industry’s (SCCCI) Special Exhibition which is being held in conjunction with the 50th anniversary of Singapore’s independence.

SCCCI, which will be celebrating its 110th anniversary next year, is the oldest and most established ethnic Chamber of Commerce in Singapore. Throughout the years, the SCCCI has been headed and supported by prominent Chinese business leaders.  Stalwarts like Lien Ying Chow, Lee Kong Chian, Tan Lark Sye, Ko Teck Kin, and Soon Peng Yam were some of the leaders of the Chinese Chamber in the 1940s-1960s.  They were successful in their respective areas of business, such as rubber, real estate, banking and shipping.  

Beyond business, these pioneers devoted their time, resources and energy to promoting the interests of the Chinese community through their work at the Chamber.  They championed many worthy causes, which benefitted not only the Chinese community but all Singaporeans.

The influence of the SCCCI goes beyond business to other sectors, be it culture, education or social welfare.  Through their hard work, fortitude, dedication to society, and selfless giving, our Chinese business pioneers have contributed to the building of Singapore.  

I commend the SCCCI for presenting the historical endeavours of our Chinese business community through this special history exhibition.  These materials will serve to educate and inspire all Singaporeans, especially our younger generations, to continue to do our part for Singapore and the community.
