Good Afternoon
My wife and I are very happy to host this afternoon’s reception. We are very pleased to have the opportunity to thank the National Day Parade (NDP) 2017 Organising Committee and participants for putting up a very successful and spectacular performance.
This year, we celebrate our nation's 52nd year of independence at the Marina Bay Floating Platform. The parade and show received much praise from Singaporeans.
Spectators were in for a visual treat at this year’s parade. Many Singaporeans were impressed by the dynamic defence displays, which showcased the might and professionalism of our SAF and the Home Team agencies, in dealing with new security threats. I could literally hear the gasps of admiration within the audience, when the various teams of security personnel came onstage to tackle the perpetrators.
Another spectacular moment of NDP 2017 was the 300 unmanned drones display, an unprecedented feat in Southeast Asia. For the first time in NDP, Singaporeans watched as drones flew high against the iconic Marina Bay skyline. Apart from being an awe-inspiring sight, it inspires Singaporeans to imagine the immense opportunities that our future brings.
A special segment of the parade was the commemoration of 50 years of National Service (NS). NS is the cornerstone of our nation’s defence and security since independence. The tribute recognises the contributions of our national servicemen and thanks their families and employers for their support for NS. It serves as a reminder on the important role NS plays in protecting our nation’s sovereignty.
Beyond it being a marvellous show, NDP is also an important symbol of the “Singapore Spirit”. I was heartened to see Singaporeans coming together to show their love for Singapore – the same whole-hearted pride and unity, unchanged over the years. The road ahead remains challenging for Singapore. But with a united Singapore, I am confident that we will continue to prosper and progress as a nation. This is the best embodiment of what it means to be #OneNationTogether.
Organising NDP is no mean feat. It involved coordinating the planning, training and rehearsals of more than 5,000 performers and 10,000 working staff. Your effort and sacrifice was definitely much appreciated. I would therefore like to express my heartfelt thanks to all of you – representatives from the Ministry of Defence, the Singapore Armed Forces, the Singapore Police Force, the Singapore Civil Defence Force, Participating Organisations of the Social and Economic Groups, Singapore Silat Federation, Rex Arts, Martial House, Singapore SOKA Association, People’s Association, Ministry of Education, Heartware Network, TOUCH Community Services – and many others who have worked tirelessly behind the scenes.
Your dedication, unwavering support and enthusiastic participation delivered a fitting celebration for Singaporeans this National Day.
My wife and I look forward to meeting you later at the reception.
Thank you.
