I am deeply saddened to learn of the passing of Mr Yong Nyuk Lin, who served in Singapore’s first Cabinet from 1959 to 1976.
Mr Yong left his private sector career to enter politics and became the Member of Parliament for Geylang West in 1959. During his political career, Mr Yong helmed the Education, Health and Communications ministries and played a pivotal role in shaping modern Singapore through policies to increase access to education, enhance health care service and improve public transportation.
As Minister for Education, Mr Yong enhanced access to education by increasing the number of primary school places and expediting the school building programme and teacher training. Mr Yong also introduced multi-lingual integrated schools and encouraged the study of math, science and vocations with bursaries and scholarships.
When Mr Yong moved to the Health Ministry, he expanded hospital services, cut waiting times, and introduced programmes to enhance children’s health, all of which led to marked improvements to public health service and standards.
At the Ministry of Communications, Mr Yong made lasting contributions to reduce traffic and congestion. Many of Mr Yong’s robust transport policies and initiatives still exist today, albeit with refinements.
Singapore has lost a trusted and brilliant man in Mr Yong. I wish to convey my deepest condolences to the family of Mr Yong. We will always remember Mr Yong as one of our founding fathers who made a lasting impact towards the progress of what Singapore is today.
