The late Nelson Mandela, who was the first post-apartheid President of South Africa, presented this gift to the late President Ong Teng Cheong during his State Visit to Singapore from March 5 to 6, 1997 as part of a regional tour to strengthen South Africa’s ties with Southeast Asia following the end of apartheid.

This gift is a bronze bust of an Induna. In Zulu tradition, an Induna is a respected leader, adviser, headman or commander of a group of warriors. The feather in the headdress may signify status, achievement, or affiliation, and can help distinguish individuals or regiments within the warrior tradition.
