Nguzu Nguzu War Canoe Prow Figurehead
Country: Solomon Islands
Solomon Islands’ Governor-General David Tiva Kapu presented this gift to President Tharman Shanmugaratnam during his Official Visit to Singapore on February 18, 2025.

Dimensions: 8 × 8 × 11 cm
This war canoe prow figurehead, known as a Nguzu Nguzu, was traditionally attached near the waterline at the prow of large war canoes (tomoko) to protect the vessel and its warriors from both natural and supernatural dangers, including storms, treacherous waters, and malevolent spirits. Their distinctive appearance – often featuring a war cap and sometimes holding a smaller head – reflects their martial association.
Today, the Nguzu Nguzu has become a widely recognised national symbol of the Solomon Islands, appearing on the one-dollar coin and in various contemporary designs.
