Message by President Halimah Yacob at Singapore Children's Society virtual launch of Walk For Our Children 2021

01 September 2021

I am pleased to launch today’s virtual edition of “Walk for Our Children 2021” by Singapore Children’s Society.

Established in 1952, Singapore Children’s Society protects and nurtures children and youth of all races and religions. Today, it operates 12 service centres islandwide and offers services in four categories: Vulnerable Children and Youth, Children and Youth Services, Family Services and Research and Advocacy.

One immediate challenge is of course COVID-19, which has affected many families, especially those in vulnerable groups who have less resources to buffer against the impact.  In 2020, the number of applications to the Society for financial assistance doubled and the quantum disbursed almost tripled, compared to 2019. Such community support is invaluable in complementing government assistance and services to those in need.

Over the past 20 months, the Society has also seen the needs of its beneficiaries becoming more complex, as the pandemic has exacerbated the challenges faced by children. For instance, the disruptions in school schedules and social activities have not been easy on those affected, and this prompted the Society to provide added emotional and psychological support to those in need.  I am proud by how Singaporeans have come together in this past one and a half year.

I hope we will continue to support one another, especially those amongst us facing significant challenges and who may need more help in navigating this COVID-19 pandemic. Together, we can build an inclusive and resilient society.
